LoAnne Harmeling, an outstanding Bainbridge Island High School teacher and recipient of the 2006 Larry Lowther Distinguished Service Award for Washington State History Day, in addition to receiving the 1994 Teacher of Merit Award for Washington State History Day, submitted the following words of appreciation for her 2007 Colonial Dames scholarship via an email sent from China. "I want to sincerely thank the Colonial Dames for sponsoring my educational opportunity at the Pearl Harbor Institute last summer. Both Kaycee Taylor and I plan to collaboratively teach Pearl Harbor when I return to Bainbridge High School next year. I am currently teaching oral English at Jiangdu Senior Middle School in Jiangdu, Jiangsu Peoples Republic of China. The lessons of Pearl Harbor are many, but among them is the cost of ignorance, as was clearly expressed in the stories of the survivors, in the sites, and through lectures by the scholar leaders. I thank you for providing me with the opportunity to learn and to acquire a new perspective and new materials to help the students of Bainbridge High School also learn about this important chapter in history. I look forward to next year and the inclusion of this material in Modern World History, our required sophomore course. Keep up the good work."
